Mississippi Valley State University required a complete roof replacement of the Administration Annex II building. Independent Roofing was selected to perform the tear-off of the existing roof system and install a robust Elevate Modified Bitumen assembly, including a new tapered insulation system, structural enhancements, and dome refinishing. The project was completed safely, ahead of schedule, and without interrupting campus operations.

Challenge / Objective
The building remained fully operational throughout construction, with staff and students occupying the space. Careful planning was required to keep the facility dry and accessible, while also working within limited staging areas due to campus traffic. The building’s dome and parapets required special attention to match architectural aesthetics and improve water drainage.

Solution
The team executed a complete tear-off of the aging roof system and installed:

• A new tapered insulation package for improved drainage

• New coverboard to support a durable membrane installation

• A 2-ply Elevate Modified Bitumen roofing system

• Custom-fabricated perimeter edge metal

• Foil-faced flashing and edge metal on the facility’s dome

• Collector heads and downspouts to match the original architectural details

All work was coordinated with campus facilities and completed under tight timelines.

Results

The new roofing system significantly enhanced drainage and weather protection while preserving the appearance of the university’s historic dome. The project was completed ahead of the 150-day contract schedule with zero safety incidents, earning praise from MVSU and setting a standard for campus facility upgrades.
