The Capital Police Headquarters renovation in downtown Jackson included the removal of aging roofing systems, structural improvements, and highly customized architectural detailing. Independent Roofing played a central role in restoring watertight protection to the building — while executing intricate copper and terra cotta installations that preserved the historic aesthetic.

Challenge / Objective

This project required the demolition of both existing clay tile and built-up roofing, followed by significant structural remediation. Key challenges included:

  • Creating positive slope to drains via a lightweight concrete pour 
  • Coordinating with the GC to rebuild parapet walls to meet code and roof detailing height requirements 
  • Performing detailed sheet metal and flashing work around new architectural elements 
  • Managing sequencing alongside multiple trades in a high-profile, high-traffic public sector project

Solution

Independent Roofing executed a multi-phased solution:

  • Demolished all existing roofing materials 
  • Installed lightweight concrete to create positive drainage slope 
  • Installed a Siplast Modified Bitumen roof system and tied into new parapet walls 
  • Fabricated and installed custom copper and lead flashings with soldered copper thimbles to support clay coping 
  • Installed Ludowici terra cotta coping caps and mortared them in place 
  • Coordinated with GC on new mansard structure, applying matching Ludowici clay tiles 
  • Completed full copper trim package including gutters, downspouts, wall and window flashings
