The Meridian Crossroads Shopping Center project was a fast-track roofing solution for a busy shopping plaza with 25 active tenants — including big-box retailers and restaurants. Independent Roofing Systems installed a new TPO roofing system over 173,300 square feet of aging EPDM roofs, many of which were actively leaking. Work was completed in just six weeks, earning a 2023 Merit Award for execution and project success.

Challenge / Objective
The existing EPDM roofing system had surpassed its useful lifespan, resulting in widespread leaks. The challenge was to replace the roof across five buildings while minimizing disruption to business operations.

Solution
To solve the problem efficiently and safely:

• A new 060 mechanically attached TPO roof system was installed over the existing EPDM

• Roof crickets were designed and installed to redirect water toward 30 new shop-fabricated TPO-coated metal scuppers

• Over 70 rooftop units and penetrations were carefully flashed

• 1,400+ linear feet of walkpads were installed in high-traffic areas and around access points

• All flashing was terminated per manufacturer specs to ensure long-term waterproofing

• A constant line of communication was maintained with ownership and tenants to coordinate access and reduce disruptions

Results

The new roof system brought long-term protection to a heavily trafficked commercial center. The client was pleased with the results, and the project was recognized with a roofing industry Merit Award.
